Wish: Better Control Over Magic Trackpad And Mouse
Gaming mice actually make sense here, as you can set them to really low sensitivity for detail touch ups and then flick back to your normal speed for standard navigation. I initially bought mine for CAD work where this is useful and also extra buttons allow macros/shortcuts to be applied that can save time. The other comon tool is a graphics tablet like a wacom, but they can be difficult to get to grips with at first (no specific wacom experience but my trust wasn't easy). I can't see accuracy being the magic trackpad's forte, though if you only apply colour/contrast adjustments and maybe use automatic filters you might be ok. Old thread I know, but i thought i would write my experience on here after several months using the trackpad. I hated the trackpad at first!
I mean really hated it. I basically did not use it for a long time. However, one day I thought I will give it another go. I particularly hated clicking it so i changed the setting to the one where you can just touch it. The thing is REALLY sensitive so i mistouched it many times. However, now I am used to it and i love the track pad.
Really glad I bought it. Having said all of that, if I could only have one thing it would 100% be the mouse.
Furthermore for Lightroom and photoshop I far prefer the mouse still. 90% of the time though the trackpad is what I use - huge space saver too. Hope that helps someone doing a search or whatever.
I purchased the trackpad about an hour ago, and it is amazing device for navigating the content and performing input functions. I did read the reviews about the trackpad before I purchased the device, and was somewhat skeptical.but I am an Apple user, and understand the transformative outlook they have towards user experience. The negative messages on this board, make me feel that folks were expecting the standard user experience from a computer mouse.it is understandable that change is never easy.but Apple makes it possible. Keep an open mind to change, and I can assure you once you begin to give up the old ways, you will begin to fly with the many possibilities of this awesome device. 10 of 15 people found this useful.
I purchased the trackpad to use with my (closed) laptop, keyboard, and 27-inch monitor in the office. Setup was fast and easy. It's reliable and a delight to use. I had considered and rejected the previous version of the trackpad, because it felt clumsy when I tried it in the Apple Store. I suppose I would have gotten used to it, but I'm glad I waited for this one. Absolutely zero time getting accustomed to it.
It felt right immediately. No problems with recognition of swipes, clicks, etc. No difficulties at all. 7 of 11 people found this useful. I'm an apple fan and lover based on most on their design other than hardware or software although i'm a huge fan of Mac OS and the connectively of apple devices.
But anyways i have never buy anything on the apple store online i'm 100% an eBay user and sometimes amazon but never apple. My point is an a tech consumer and a software developer and i just bough some store at the apple store including the magic trackpad and the send me with it a usb/lighting port cable that was broke. I just pay a lot of money thinking that buying this from apple was gonna be perfect but guess what it wasn't so ill probably stick with my eBay. So the trackpad. Getting used to it it had some issues connecting with my mac but after several times it work also i was getting crazy because the cable didn't work.hehehe 5 of 56 people found this useful. I’ve read the reviews on this page and I can only wonder: do people know how to use it? If you don’t, the frustration is STILL yours as Apple is an easy to learn tutorial in the settings. I use final cut and pro tools along with other apps (safari, gmail, etc) daily and the magic trackpad 2 makes them all a breeze to navigate inside as well as between them. I definitely recommend this if you’re forward thinking and like me: just plain sick of a mouse. Again: don’t be fooled by bad reviews. I've found it frustrating to use when designing & retouching, had to revert to my old Kensington Expert Mouse. Having said that I've never been able to use a standard Apple mouse for design work either. The Trackpad Preferences settings BADLY needs a 'Scroll Speed' adjustment setting, as there is none. If you're on a 27' iMac it takes multiple swipes to slowly scroll through a long web page, for example. Currently I'm using both the Trackpad and Expert Mouse for different applications, just takes up more desk space.

I thought I would use the track pad for casual computer use and then use my mouse for games and more intensive computer work. Well, I've found that I rarely use the mouse now (only easier for one or two games) and I use the track pad as my primary form of navigation on my iMac.

The only thing that can be difficult, stated in early posts, is the click and drag, but really, I haven't had that hard of a time using it. It has made up for that fault in ease of use in almost every other area. Mechanically, the device seems to be going strong, connects fine, and holds a good charge (Only charged it twice over 3 months with near daily use). I would recommend this. 13 of 15 people found this useful. The Magic Trackpad 2 makes me work too hard to do very basic tasks it's meant to do. When set to use the physical click it is near impossible.
The click just doesn't want to happen easily, and then when I try harder to get a click to register I end up double clicking words or file items unintentionally and the Mac OS wants to do something I'm not asking for like give me a dictionary entry or select a whole paragraph. I can't say why it isn't working well, but I suspect the lower profile of Trackpad 2 means the 'travel' on the button click is a shorter distance and it doesn't easily take and hold a click. I can get around the issue somewhat by turning on 'tap to click' in Preferences. But then situations quickly come up where you need to physically click. For example, you need to click and drag an icon to organize items within the dock, or selecting a group of items on the desktop with click and drag, or moving a document file from one folder to the next in finder.
This thing is just a pain and although I want something.like. this, I'm seriously considering returning it. 13 of 16 people found this useful. I just switched from the original magic mouse (which I LOVED) to the magic trackpad. I was concerned I would have a hard time switching from the mouse, but I was WAY wrong!
So easy to use! Tracking is spot on! Love the simple gesture controls and the fact its rechargeable. My previous magic mouse almost always seemed to have dead batteries, and the other day a battery leaked and ruined my magic mouse. I'm glad I decided to try the magic trackpad. I was on the fence for a few days thinking about magic mouse or trackpad. Best choice ever!
12 of 14 people found this useful. I was so scared of the negative reviews of this trackpad that I went down to my local Best Buy and purchased it there so that I could return it right away if I needed to.
Needless to say, I didn't return this one. This is a beautiful trackpad. It feels like an upgrade to my MacBook Pro trackpad. And it worked perfectly directly out of the box.
As far as claims of glitchy connections with the laptop, I've dealt with a lot of glitchy wireless mice in the past even to the point that I finally went back to completely hard wired. This one, however, is not glitchy! It is rock solid. From the moment I turned it on, it connected with my MacBook Pro and was super responsive and precise. The only time I had an issue with it dropping connection to the laptop was as it neared the end of the battery charge. It would connect and disconnect over and over again.
I plugged it in and charged it, but it kept doing the same thing. So I switched it off and back on and it was as good as new, solid, precise, perfect. A lot of reviewers complained about the click and drag. Let me clarify. This is a 'force touch' trackpad. It gives you one functionality with a light touch and a different one with a heavy touch.
It can take some getting used to. Click and drag requires a light touch. If you tend to click heavy when you drag, place the finger of one hand lightly on the pad for 'click' and use the finger of your other hand for 'drag.' My guess is that it won't be long until you are clicking and dragging like a pro one-handed. So don't believe all the negative reviews. This is a really super trackpad, and I think you'll love it.
186 of 196 people found this useful. I thought I loved my old Magic Trackpad. Sooo much better than a mouse, so much easier on my wrists, so much more responsive. And I did love the old MT.
Until I couldn't get it to stop acting erratically, so I gave up and popped for the MT2. Much smoother, even better than my iPad; I can even draw with my finger in Photoshop and Illustrator, and the resulting drawing looks. Really pretty good (with a little practice, I'm sure it will be even better), and not the complete mess it was with the old MT. This is a great thing, even if you're not going to draw with it. I love it already. 17 of 19 people found this useful. The Magic Trackpad 2 would be great if it behaved the way that the MacBook force touch trackpads work, but it doesn't.
The touch response is considerably less consistent and the 'click' more mushy. Worse though, is it's wireless performance. It disconnects frequently, and even when it is connected, will frequently lag, stutter, jitter, and in general perform strangely. Even the click will lag, which feels extremely unresponsive and ruins the illusion of a physical click. I hope to see a better version of this in the Magic Trackpad 3 whenever that comes.
I can only hope that it 1) has usb c. 2) works properly wirelessly.
3) is as responsive as the MacBook version. And 4) comes in something other than white (the white finish is quite difficult to keep clean as it is a user input device) 14 of 20 people found this useful.
