Can't really find out how to work it. Add a bit of bitcrusher to it, and you've got the basis of the Genesis' sound chip, which was I believe an FM synth. I would seriously see what you can do about learning the E FM1. Oh, sorry, I meant I couldn't get the freeware VST wrapper to work properly.
And yes, that synthesizer is quite interesting. On it's own it can create some interesting tones, along with channel effects, it can be quite the generator.

There have been various attempts at emulating the Genesis’ sound engine, such as FMDrive or the free YM2612 VST. The latest one is sample-based and comes courtesy of LoopLords. Standard and very usable stuff, all in all. Overall, this is a fun and nostalgic synth that makes a respectable attempt at bringing the Sega Genesis sound back to life once more.
