Can't really find out how to work it. Add a bit of bitcrusher to it, and you've got the basis of the Genesis' sound chip, which was I believe an FM synth. I would seriously see what you can do about learning the E FM1. Oh, sorry, I meant I couldn't get the freeware VST wrapper to work properly.

And yes, that synthesizer is quite interesting. On it's own it can create some interesting tones, along with channel effects, it can be quite the generator.

. The Sega Genesis console from 1988 is known for boasting an Yamaha FM synthesis chip that composers have coaxed iconic soundtracks out of — such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Outrun, and Streets of Rage. There have been various attempts at emulating the Genesis’ sound engine, such as FMDrive or the free YM2612 VST. The latest one is sample-based and comes courtesy of LoopLords. It’s a plug-in called Genetix and features 100 multi-sampled FM sounds inspired from various Genesis games’ soundtracks, in addition to 13 bonus sounds.

It contains 1.2 GB of content, overall. The sample engine boasts 3 voice modes: polyphonic, monophonic, and legato. There’s an LFO with different waveshapes & depth and rate controls which can be mapped to pitch, pan, and other knobs. A traditional ADSR envelope lets you shape volume by adjusting Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release parameters. There’s a cutoff filter, built-in reverb, and Glide. Standard and very usable stuff, all in all. Overall, this is a fun and nostalgic synth that makes a respectable attempt at bringing the Sega Genesis sound back to life once more.
