StoryMill (previously called Avenir) adds a new timeline view for tracking scenes in chronological time as well as narrative order, provides vastly improved customizable export templates for exporting text from anywhere in the project, integrates scene text and chapter text, and like Avenir before it still uses tags and smart views for powerful and simple organization.

If you are a writer, I strongly recommend StoryMill; although its structure is most conducive for fiction and creative non-fiction, it is an excellent piece of software and provides powerful features that can help with any writing project (not to mention that as of its release, no other creative writing software on the market for Mac has anything like its timeline view). I enjoyed the program for a few days, then encountered a problem while saving my files, I could save, but not reopen saved projects. To help fix my problem I Googled the name of the program & found the website, hoping to find a patch to download, or a help section that would help explain to me what I needed to do to fix it.

I soon found out that the program I. was using was no longer avalible for download, & had nothing on the website regarding it. I looked around the website a little more & found that they had re-released this program under the name StoryMill. I quickly uninstalled Avenir, & downloaded the trial of StoryMill 3.2.3.

I really like that StoryMill has the exact same layout & interface as Avenir did, this made it a lot easier to go from using one, to the other. First thing I did when opening StoryMill was check if I could open my saved files from Avenir (the files that would not open on Avenir). I was extremely. happy to see that they worked perfectly fine, & had all the details & preference saved along with my actual story. One of my favorite features of Storymill is the choice to have chapters, as well as scenes within chapters.

All I had to do was write a scene in the “scenes” tab & select which chapter it belonged to. After doing that I could just go to my ‘Chapters’ tab & the scene was already in my chapter. If you don’t really like using scenes, you could also just write directly in the chapter you would like to write.

You can decide to view. “Chapters + Scenes”, “Chapters”, or “Scenes”, giving you a few options on how you want to write your story. Besides the “Chapters” & “Scenes” tabs you can also organize all of your characters, locations, tasks, & research using their tabs. Having so many different ways of sort out ideas & specifics make it so much easier to write your book, & keep continuity. This program was my first, and last program I have used to help myself in my writing. I would recommend this program to anyone starting to write their first book. Also, if you are still using Avenir, upgrade to StoryMill!
