So i was thinking last night - how sweet would it be to have a turntable that could transmit MIDI data. Things are getting pretty close to this now i think - with awesome programs like serato, ms pinky, final scratch, torq etc available to consumers. And this dude: has built an ensemble in reaktor for decoding ANY digital vinyl timecode. I wrote a universal timecode decoder (universal to the extent that it seems to work with every type of timecode I’ve got, Final Scratch, Traktor Scratch, Torq, Serato, Ms.

Pinky), so that I could get rotation speed/direction, then applied that to multi-timbrel samplers that are MIDI controlled. By triggering midi values you can inject a sample into the scratching stream, through voice control you can automatically choke it at a limits to avoid things getting mushy. Samples can be loops or one-shots, any length (ram permitting) This opens up a lot of interesting possibilities such as ’simul scratching’, the ability to scratch two or more samples at the same time, ’sequ scratching’, the ability to inject arbitrary samples quantized to the BPM of your host environment. There’s also some tricks I haven’t revealed yet that will be showing up in my next demo. The juice of this really was getting timecode extracted in some usable form such that it could be applied to samplers / synthesizers, while this technology has existed for a while nobody that I’m aware of has applied it in the fashion I have and this is just the tip of the iceberg. It gives live performers a lot of leverage for improv and studio knob twiddlers an unprecedented amount of control over scratching. Source: now this is cool!!!

I have no scratching skills at all - but the tactile nature of vinyl makes for such an intuitive control surface that i am REALLY looking forward to where this heads in the future. Any thoughts? That definitely looks cool - but it seems more focused on scratching visuals. Although the site says the turntable can output all the usual MIDI info. I'm talking about a turntable that functions as a control surface for say your synthesiser. Assign it to pitch, and to send start/stop messages when you stop the platter or kick it off from the start point.

And manipulate that sound. Or assign to the bpm of your sequencer, again with start/stop msgs. I reckon there's some crazy possibilities. And i know it ain't exactly 'pure' in the hip hop sense. Just thought i'd see if anyone had any thoughts. However, tt in conjunction w/ cc crossfade + cc lowpass cutoff footpedal? Scratching in various bits of your own beats in DAW?

I shake with excitement. This will be functional with code records? Or are you just using the turntable for it's quartz locking for perfection of latency? The dj software is called 'djdecks' it's like a version of Final Scratch/Serato, just without the extra hardware. In djdecks, you can soft-route the outgoing audio signal to Reaper using Rearoute add a track in Reaper, turn the track to monitor the incoming signal from Rearoute. As far as DAW-integration goes, using Rearoute to link up Djdecks with Reaper is a wide-open door.

I have not even BEGUN to fully grasp the coolness that could result from this. Midi can be sent to either/or realtime VST plugins on the Reaper track (various filters, delays, etc) as well as DJdecks itself (crossfader, a number of other fx and handy stuff). Realtime manipulation of a nice lowpass filter, delay crossover, reverb.so much cool stuff to hide how bad i am at scratching (or embellish someone who's better). All in all it is a nice environment for me to become a better dj. I'm no djdecks expert yet, i'm still demoing the program. Haven't bought it yet.

Unfortunately they upped the price for the software to 190 or so usd.
